Description
Michter's Fort Nelson Reserve Barrel Strength Rye is a special single barrel release that honors Michter's historic Fort Nelson Distillery on Louisville's Museum Row. The distillery is housed in a beautifully restored 1890 landmark and is home to the legendary pot still and cypress wood fermenter system from Michter's original Pennsylvania distillery, a heritage that traces back to 1753.
Michters is known for taking extra steps that most distillers skip, and this rye shows why. The distillate goes into the barrel at a lower 103 proof instead of the more common industry standard. That costs more in barrels and warehouse space, but it yields a richer, smoother, more full-bodied whiskey after proper maturation. The whiskey ages in fire-charred new American white oak barrels, made from wood that is air-dried and toasted before charring, and it matures in heat-cycled warehouses for greater depth and complexity.
As a true single barrel, barrel strength whiskey, every bottle comes straight from one barrel at its natural proof, with no dilution. Each barrel has its own character, so every bottle is one of a kind.
Tasting Notes
• Nose: Butterscotch and cinnamon with a hint of cherry
• Palate: Warm and rich, with toasty vanilla and caramel up front
• Finish: Dry, with lingering oaky spice
Bold, spicy, and beautifully balanced, Fort Nelson Reserve Rye rewards slow sipping, neat or with a few drops of water to open it up. It also makes an exceptional high-proof Manhattan or Old Fashioned. It's a standout bottle for rye lovers and Michter's collectors alike.
