Description
Michter's 20 Year Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon is one of the rarest and most celebrated releases in American whiskey. Michter's doesn't release it on a set annual schedule because extended aging in new oak is so difficult. Each batch is bottled only when the barrels are judged ready. The 2025 edition is the latest bottling of this ultra-aged icon.
Master Distiller Dan McKee selects every barrel by hand after rigorous sampling. Michter's watches its stocks especially closely once they reach 17 years of age. It calls the 17-to-20-year window the "Fork in the Road Point," when select barrels reach an extraordinary level of quality. The whiskey matures in heat-cycled warehouses, which give more control over aging and a better chance that an older bourbon will also be a great one.
Tasting Notes
• Nose: Browned butter, butterscotch, sassafras, and root beer over cedar spice
• Palate: Deep vanilla, toffee, and chocolate layered with spice, red fruit, crème brûlée, cinnamon, and clove
• Finish: Long, with toasted oak, pipe tobacco, maraschino cherry, and leather
Even after two decades in the barrel, the oak never takes over. It deepens and enhances the whiskey's character, giving it an expansive palate. This is a collector's bottle and a true once-in-a-while pour.
