Description

Dom Pérignon is Champagne's most celebrated prestige cuvée. It has been made only in declared vintage years since its first release, the 1921. Every bottle is a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir drawn from the 17 Grand Cru villages of Champagne and the historic Premier Cru of Hautvillers, where the Benedictine monk Dom Pierre Pérignon laid the groundwork for the region's winemaking in the 17th century. Each vintage ages on its lees for at least eight years before release.

The 2017 is a rare and unconventional Dom Pérignon. The house skipped the 2016 vintage entirely. 2017 started out warm and very ripe, but storms in mid-August brought rain and a hurried early harvest, so the grapes had to be selected without compromise. The result is the smallest Dom Pérignon blend ever produced. Because the Chardonnay was outstanding that year, it makes up 61% of the blend. That is the second-highest share in the cuvée's history, surpassed only by the 1970. Chef de Caves Vincent Chaperon calls 2017 an atypical, "radical" vintage, and critics have widely praised it as a triumph over a difficult year. Limited production means it won't stay available for long.
Tasting Notes: Pale gold with green highlights and a fine, silky mousse. The nose opens with the scent of rain on warm stone, then jasmine, lemon confit, orange peel, dried apricot and marzipan, followed by the house's signature smoky, toasted-brioche reduction. The palate is broad and creamy with an exotic richness, balanced by lively acidity and a subtle, pleasant bitterness. The finish is long and mineral, with citrus, ripe fruit, toasted hazelnut and a touch of cacao. It benefits from a few minutes in the glass and will continue to develop through the late 2030s.
