Description

Weinlaubenhof Kracher in Illmitz, on the shores of Lake Neusiedl in Austria's Burgenland, is one of the world's most celebrated sweet-wine estates, elevated to international fame by the late Alois "Luis" Kracher and now led by his son Gerhard. Kracher numbers its Trockenbeerenauslesen in ascending order of sweetness and divides them into two lines: "Zwischen den Seen" wines raised in stainless steel or large old acacia casks, and "Nouvelle Vague" wines aged in new French oak barriques. The Grande Cuvée is the estate's signature blend, typically based on Chardonnay and Welschriesling, made from heavily botrytized, individually selected berries.

Tasting Notes: Nose: Dried apricot, candied pineapple, honeycomb, vanilla and toasted oak. Palate: Rich and concentrated with marmalade, baked peach, saffron and crème brûlée, balanced by vibrant acidity. Finish: Very long and complex with honeyed spice.

Serve lightly chilled in small pours with foie gras, Roquefort or Stilton, or rich desserts like tarte Tatin; it also ages gracefully for decades.
