Description

Feudi di San Gregorio, founded in 1986 in Irpinia in the hills of Campania, is widely credited with bringing international recognition to southern Italy's native varieties, and is owned today by the Capaldo family. Serpico is the estate's flagship red, named for the village of Sorbo Serpico where the winery stands. It is made from Aglianico grown on very old vines, some of them ungrafted and pre-phylloxera, and aged in French oak for a powerful, age-worthy wine.

Tasting Notes: Nose: Black cherry, blackberry and plum with notes of tobacco, licorice, graphite and sweet spice. Palate: Full-bodied and concentrated, with dark fruit, firm, fine-grained tannins and lively acidity giving structure and depth. Finish: Long and savory, with lingering cocoa, spice and mineral notes.

Decant and serve with braised lamb, wild boar ragu, grilled steak or aged pecorino. It has the structure to develop further with cellaring.
