The use of wheat in place of rye creates the soft, rounded character associated with Van Winkle bourbon. Twenty years of aging brings remarkable depth, revealing concentrated layers of caramel, vanilla, dried fruit, roasted nuts and seasoned oak. Bottled at an elegant 90.4 proof, it delivers a refined balance of mature wood, lingering sweetness and warming spice.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: Deep caramel, vanilla bean and brown sugar mingle with dried fruit, toasted nuts, old leather and polished oak.
Palate: Luxuriously smooth and full-bodied with layers of dark caramel, maple, vanilla and ripe fruit. Notes of cocoa, roasted pecans, cinnamon, tobacco and mature oak add remarkable depth and complexity.
Finish: Exceptionally long and warming, leaving lingering impressions of caramelized sugar, baking spices, leather, toasted nuts and beautifully seasoned oak.
The Van Winkle Legacy
The Van Winkle family’s whiskey heritage began in the late 1800s when Julian “Pappy” Van Winkle Sr. entered the Kentucky bourbon industry. He later became a central figure behind the legendary Stitzel-Weller Distillery, which opened in Louisville on Derby Day in 1935.
Pappy believed that exceptional whiskey could not be rushed. His commitment to quality, patient aging and traditional wheated bourbon became the foundation of the Van Winkle legacy.
Today, that tradition continues through the Van Winkle family’s partnership with Buffalo Trace Distillery. Each release is carefully matured and selected according to the family’s exacting standards.
